Frequently ask question: HOW MUCH FRAGRANCE OILS TO ADD IN CANDLES

Ratio of fragrance oil to wax
The amount of fragrance oil you should add to your candle depends on 3 factors:

– The type of wax you use
– The flash point of the fragrance oil
– The strength of the scent

Type of wax:
Each type of wax has different melting point. Soywax be the softer wax with low melting point and weaker base note. Palm wax have higher melting point and stronger base note. Different wax also contribute to different base note of candle.

Flash point for fragrance oil is normally high. The flash point is the temperature where a fluid (any fluid) gives off enough vapor that an open flame could ignite it. This doesn’t have to be a continuous more ‘flammable fire’ but a brief flash of light, hence the name flash point. Flash point of each fragrance is different.

Strength of scent
Fragrance oil base note also play a role in the candle scent throw. 3-6% is recommended dosage for fragrance oil in candle.

Measuring your fragrance oil
Measuring your fragrance oil in weight (grams) rather than volume (ml) will result in a more accurate wax to fragrance oil ratio. Many fragrances have different densities (some are thicker than others).

Calculating Fragrance oil
To illustrate, if you are making a candle using 600 grams of soy wax and you want to incorporate 8% of fragrance oil into the candle, the amount you need is as follows:

600 x 0.08 = 48 grams

Flash Point: 101 Celcius
