Description
Coconut oil is edible oil extracted from kernel of coconut (Cocos nucifera). Coconut oil is high in saturated fat. The most common saturated fats namely lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid are often manufacture into fatty alcohols. Fatty Alcohols act as emulsifier in emulsion products be it food grade or cosmetic grade. Due to its high in saturated fats properties, it is slow in oxidise, thus resistant to rancidification.
Coconut oil is widely use in hair care products, massage oils, and body care products. Coconut oil carries slight coconut scent, but is considered odourless because it has been REFINED, BLEACHED and DEODORISED. This process also makes coconut oil more stable for cosmetics products application.
Natural soap makers usually combine it with olive oil, palm oil, or castor oil for an all vegetable soap.
Good to know!
Use in soapmaking: Its saturated nature resists rancidity and makes very hard soap, yet its low molecular weight allows for high solubility and a quick fluffy leather.
