Description
Salicylic Acid is an organic acid. It is used as key ingredients in topical anti-acne products. With its acidic properties, Salicylic Acid is commonly used in skin exfoliating. It peels the outer skin membrane and generates skin renewal. Cotton pads soaked in Salicylic Acid is the common products found in market especially the US.
As with its beta hydroxy acid part, Salicylic Acid is used to treat acne. The skin disease caused by Propionibacterium Acnes, a type of gram positive bacteria.
However, excessive of Salicylic Acid in skin care products can caused burning. This is because it would penetrates into the skin and hence breaking down the lips and fats which causes moderates burning. It is also advisable that products formulated with Salicylic Acid should not be used everyday as it will caused dryness to skin. It eventually causes less sebum secreted and drier skin complexion. Products formulated with Salicylic Acid generally has lower pH around 2-3. Our skin pH is 5.5, therefore a pH of 2-3 can caused dryness to skin.
The recommended dosage of Salicylic Acid in topical product is below 2% .

Salicylic Acid is generally hard to dissolve in water. Improper dissolving procedure may caused Salicylic Acid to be crystallised in final products. Slight heating of Salicylic Acid could better dissolve Salicylic Acid in formulation.
